I believe the social systems that affected Sergeant Price’s decision to “take care” of his dog were his line of work and his family (his brothers in his squad). I think this because Sergeant Price comes from a military background. Sergeant Price and his squad were trained to kill dogs. The story starts off with “We shot dogs. Not by accident. We did it on purpose…” They were given orders to shoot and kill dogs which he thought about a lot. These orders were called “Operation Scooby”.
I couldn't however shoot my own dog. No matter how old, or as much pain as she looked like she was in I couldn't handle it. I would be scarred for life. I would prefer to take her to the vet and say my goodbye. I honestly don't know if I could handle staying in the same room and watching her die. Also I wasn't born or trained to be a soldier or a killer.
I understand how and why Sergeant Price can perform the act of “taking care” of his dog. From his training in the military he had learned to kill the dogs as quickly as possible with as little pain as possible to the dog. Sergeant Price describes it as “There had to be three shots. Its not just pull the trigger and you're done. Got to do it right. Hammer pair to the body. A final well-aimed shot to the head.” Because Price had done it so many times before the process had become very natural and easy for him to do.
