A food desert is a place where fresh food isn't readably available. That means it’s hard for them to get fruit, vegetables, and milk.
At the church near them they serve dinners for about 80-120 people on wednesday that consist of some kind of meat or carbohydrate with a big side of vegetables and fruit. These people are food insecure.
Food insecure means you don’t know when your next meal will be.
When you think of people that are food insecure you think of the people you see in Africa who are skin and bones on those commercials on T.V. and thats not true. One in six Americans don’t have food to eat. That makes 50 million Americans with no food.
The story travels to different places throughout the U.S. Another place we learn about is Johnestown, Mississippi where they have the highest obesity. You quickly learn that hunger and obesity aren’t very different. In fact they are neighbors. They are like this because fruit and vegetables are up forty percent while processed foods are down forty percent. Spending wise if you have low income this makes people choose the worse for you processed foods that make you fat. This is like this because of the food subsides.
Food subsides are when the government pays farmer to grow specific crops.
If you are not well nourished from the time you are little you can have a lot of health problems. This is a major problem in the United States of America that needs to be handled immediately!
